Through its title and players' objectives, the competition shows strong support to the new candidature of the city of Rijeka for the organization of Mediterranean games in 2017. From this support stems the title "Mediterranean 2017," chess with the scent of the sea. The additional purpose is to promote the town of Rijeka and Croatia in typical chess manner with the goal to obtain the organization of the Mediterranean games. Another goal is that the competition becomes traditional, mainly because is the most important tournament with highest quality and the largest number of players.
System of play: Swiss / 9 rounds.
Tempo of play: 90 minutes per player + 30 extra seconds for each move played starting with the first.
The tournament will be registered with FIDE in order to assign the rating and title norms.
Chief arbiter: Eduard Piacun, international arbiter.
Comeptition fee:
220 kunas for home players, 30 euros for
foreign participants; Grand masters
and international masters, as well as
under-16 and over-60 participants are
exempted from paying the entry fee; FIDE
masters pay 50 percent of the competition fee;
Players from Primorsko-goranska County pay 50
percent of the competition fee

The tournament closing ceremony and the award
ceremony will be held on 6 December 2008 at 15.00. The
organizer will provide chess sets for all players. Each
player should bring a well-functioning digital watch.
